A BRIEF HISTORY OF L'ALFÀS DEL PI
L'Alfàs del Pi originated as a fortified settlement inland to defend against attacks by Berber pirates. The name "Alfàs" is Moorish and means cultivated land, fertile land. Its traditional economy was linked to the land, with the production of fruit trees or almonds, as well as the extraction of iron or gypsum. It belonged to the Barony of Polop. In the 17th century, there was a strong population increase. In 1786, the villagers planted a large pine tree in the town square, thus asserting their independence from Polop, which they achieved in 1836. This event was recorded in the town's name, "Pi," which in the local Valencian dialect means “pine."
